Turnstile's reverent take on the Stone Roses
Turnstile, like the Stone Roses, are a band I came to extremely late. By the time their song “Mystery” caught my attention in 2021, the band was already three albums deep into their melodic punk anthems. The rest of Glow On is a bit too hardcore for this soft boy, but I found last year’s “Never Enough” (both the song and the album) more agreeable.
The band’s cover of the Stone Roses' 1989 classic is similarly genial: faithful to its slow build and wandering guitar riffs, and marvelously alive to its yearning. In 2026 “I Wanna Be Adored” could sound like an influencer’s anthem — what else, after all, does anyone posting to Instagram want? Credit to Turnstile’s Brendan Yates for channeling something harsher, and more eternal.
